Iraq weekly report, week 44

Islamist militants led by the Islamic State (IS) organisation continue to battle with the federal and Kurdish security forces in several parts of the central and northern region.

International air strikes also continue to target the group, especially in parts of Ninawa, Ta'mim and Anbar provinces, although strikes also continue to take place sporadically elsewhere in the country.

Last week a total of 22 non-suicide bomb attacks left 50 people dead and 162 injured. Five additional suicide bombings left 36 people dead and 77 injured.

Small arms attacks left 20 people dead and two injured, including members of the security forces shot during clashes with militants.

Indirect fire incidents (rockets, mortars and military artillery shelling) left 22 people dead and 55 injured.

At least 114 people were reportedly abducted while reports indicate that over 230 people were executed by IS militants, including dozens of people from the Albu Nimr clan (part of the powerful Dulaimi tribe) in Anbar province.

If accurate, this incident will likely intimidate the Sunni tribes from fighting against the IS organisation in the short term but it also means that the militants will struggle to establish a long-term presence in Anbar province.
