Islamist militants led by the Islamic State (IS) organisation continue to battle with the federal and Kurdish security forces in several parts of the central and northern region. Violence was particularly concentrated in Salah ad-Din, Anbar and Ninawa provinces.

Countrywide, at least 19 non-suicide bomb attacks left 27 people dead and 73 injured. Four additional suicide bombings left 20 people dead and 33 injured.

Small arms attacks left 51 people dead and 33 injured, including members of the security forces shot during clashes with militants.

Indirect fire incidents (rockets, mortars and military artillery shelling) left 67 people dead and 162 injured.

At least 132 people were publicly executed by militants or murdered only to have their bodies later recovered by the authorities.

At least 253 people were also abducted by either IS militants or criminal groups, although several were rescued by the authorities.
